A Path of Wisdom for Self-Control | David Welch

Proverbs 25:28 "Like a city that is broken into and without walls is a man who has no control over his spirit."

Proverbs 16:32 "He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city."

THE IDEA:

"Self-control is the steady capacity to direct yourself to accomplish what you have chosen or decided to do and be, even though you 'don't feel like it.'" - Dallas Willard

I. WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL

Proverbs 25:28 "Like a city that is broken into and without walls is a man who has no control over his spirit."

Proverbs 16:32 "He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city."

II. HOW DOES SELF-CONTROL GROW IN US

  1. Learn to center your heart on Christ

    Psalm 37:3-5

"Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it."

  2. Learn to embrace repentance

  3. Constantly repair your thoughts

    2 Corinthians 10:3-5

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ."

  4. Learn to rely on the Holy Spirit for the Power to do it

Galatians 5:16 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh."

  5. Identify and Remove the Triggers

  6. What to do with failure

James 3:2 "we all stumble in many ways."

Martin Luther - "to progress is always to begin always to begin again."

III. HOW TO GAIN AN ADVANTAGE

James 1:2-4

"Consider it all joy, my bretheren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
