First Devotional, Day 1: Seek the Kingdom

February 5, 2024

Day 1

Key Verse:

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.”

Matthew 6:33 NASB

Seek first the kingdom of God. Clear instruction on how to live our lives. So, why is it so difficult to do this? Do we really seek His kingdom first and foremost? Or do we seek comfort, security, and wealth first? Many of us have jobs, homes we must upkeep, or children to raise. It is easy to let the distractions of life get in the way of truly living for Christ. So, what does it mean to seek first the kingdom of God?

At the core, it means to seek His will above all else. It means making Him and time with Him a priority. That can look like reading the Word each morning to start the day. Or spending quiet time with Him without all the distractions of texts, emails, or the never-ending list of things to do. Really being still so that we can commune with Him and hear Him speak to our hearts and minds.

Seeking Him first also means submitting to Him. It means putting His wants and desires above our own. Perhaps He has called you to a vocation or to a new destination, but it is not what you had in mind for you or your family. Perhaps He is leading you to serve in a capacity that is outside your comfort zone. Laying down your desires and fully submitting to Him is not always easy. However, if we can truly put our trust in Him and trust His will for our lives, then we can rest assured that it will be fulfilling.

Heart Prompts

  1. What things do you seek first before the kingdom of God?

  2. What are some ways that you could re-prioritize things in your life to live for Him first?

  3. Is there anything holding you back from fully submitting to His will?

Pray

Dear Lord, help me to submit to you and your will for my life. I want to seek you first and foremost and not let the distractions of this world take priority. Help me to find ways to spend time with you and put your wants and desires above my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
