First Things First (part 3): Seek Christ First, Pastor David Welch

February 18, 2024

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:19-24, 33  (NASB1995)

Here’s the bottom line:

Jesus is telling us that if you want the life that the gospel promises, it will come to you as you learn to seek Him first.

Is Christ First? Three Questions:

1. What Does Your Heart Treasure?

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “

Matthew 6:19-21   (NASB1995)

And that’s why Jesus answers with --

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28  (NASB1995)

37 “… Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”

John 7:37-38  (NASB1995)

“I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly.”

John 10:10  (NASB1995)

2. Who Reigns Over You?

BUT SEEK FIRST HIS KINGDOM and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33  (NASB1995)

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, let die to himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Luke 9:23  (NASB1995)

3. What Is Your Core Principle?

“But seek first His kingdom AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33  (NASB1995)

“… and [we] are justified [declared righteous] by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”

The Outcome

“ … and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33   (NASB1995)

Everything you need.

You’ll have everything you need.

“Since he has not withheld his son, how will he not with him give you all things”

Romans 8:31  (NASB1995)

“I have never seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread … 39 He is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The LORD helps them and delivers them;”

Psalm 37:25, 39  (NASB1995)

“He will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus”

Philippians 4:19   (NASB1995)
