First Things First (part 5): Outcomes of gospel-shaped generosity, Pastor David Welch

March 3, 2024

6 "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows [a]bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written,

“He scattered abroad, he gave to the poor, His righteousness endures forever.”

10 Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; 11 you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the [d]saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God. 13 Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, 14 while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!"

"The same [gospel] that came to you is going out all over the world and changing lives everywhere, just as it changed yours that very first day you heard it and understood about God’s great kindness to sinners."

Colossians 1:6 (The Living Bible, Paraphrased)

“… and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.”

6 “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

10 He who   supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others,

15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!”

Big Idea:

I want you to experience the outcomes of a generosity in you shaped by the gospel

Outcomes of gospel-shaped generosity

I. You Will Experience Blessing

“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. “

II. You will experience joy

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

III. You Will Experience Grace

8 “And God is able to make all grace abound to you  11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.”

The Motivation: You deeply feel the value of the gospel

“… see that you also excel in this grace of giving. […] For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.”
