THE IDEA:
Anger becomes dangerous when turned selfish; becomes destructive when it goes bad; and is healed when Christ is formed in you
Proverbs 14:17 "A quick-tempered man acts foolishly"
Proverbs 14:29 "He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly".
Proverbs 15:18 "A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, But the slow to anger pacifies contention."
Proverbs 16:32 "He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city."
Proverbs 19:11 "A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression."
Proverbs 19:19 "A man of great anger shall bear the penalty, For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again."
Proverbs 22:24-25 "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared."
Proverbs 25:28 "Like a city that is broken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit."
I. The Danger is In Its Power
Proverbs 25:28
"Like a city that is borken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit."
II. The Harm is In How It Goes Bad
Proverbs 25:28
"Like a city that is borken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit."
Proverbs 29:11
"A fool always loses his temper, but a wise man holds it back."
Three Courageous Questions
Am I willing to accept that nothing external causes my anger?
Am I willing to ask deeply, "What disordered desire in me triggers my anger?"
Am I willing to seek healing of the selfish anger residing in me?
III. The Healing of It is In Chirst Being Formed In You
Proverbs 19:11 (NIV)
"A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense."
Proverbs 16:32
"He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city."
Galatians 4:19 “until Christ is formed in you”
1 Peter 2:21–24
… Christ … leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,
WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Ephesians 4:31–5:2
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;
and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
